Thanks for your kindness and support, Kevin. It is always wonderful to hear from you. I wish you well in your studies. You have already made an amazing impact through Village Volunteers and I know you will continue to do so whereever you are - because you are a tremdously giving human being.

Great piece, again. i am glad you got to see Brock's video, i haven't but studying international development throws the figures on development programs and their effects, and everyday i ask myself why i am in this line of study.
however, change is what you make, so whatever you did despite your 'teach-o-phobia" for one of the people in the audience, if not more, it made all the difference.

thanks Brock, and Kim, you always did have my support, always will. :-)

Peter, thank you for the wonderful offer. Please do send your materials to the executive director of Village Volunteers, Shana Greene. I already know she'd love to have them as she too is a fan of your film. I emailed you the address.

Kate, thank you for the words of encouragement and sound advice. I will do my best to "lead out." It's been nice to have terrific examples of how best to do that in people such as yourself. :)

Congratulations -- you sound exactly like a teacher! I know -- as someone paid to do that job and marveling constantly that I am, those are the anxieties we all have, but when you get into the thick of it, you remember what the real aim is -- not injecting "knowledge" into others heads, but helping your students figure things out that they already know, to articulate the things they have sensed but never spelled out for themselves. Well worth remembering the Latin root of educate (oh, listen to the medievalist, always with the Latin roots!) which means to lead out. Not to know, not to tell, but to lead out what's already there.

I often think the best quality for a teacher is curiosity -- well, it's the best quality for a student, too, as you well know (and have in abundance). Listen and find out all you can from your students, and they will have a great experience. So will you!

Kim,

Thanks for posting something about my film. Your organization looks very interesting and your operating principles seem quite sound. I created this film specifically for the purpose of sparking debate and critical thought among those in the development community. I would be happy to send you free DVD copies of the film if you would have a use for them in your organization. Several other volunteer type programs are using the film as a pre-trip educational tool to sensitize volunteers to issues of respect and dependency. Please feel free to contact me for questions or copies.

Best,

Peter Brocck
